Spades in the browser, the partnership game played across the United States: spades are always trump, you and the partner across the table bid together, nil and bags decide close games, first to 500 wins. Or switch to Batak, the Turkish auction game where everyone plays alone and the high bidder picks trump.

The deal is provably fair: the shuffle is sealed with a hash before the hand and the seed is revealed afterwards, so you can recompute the order of all 52 cards. A free coach plays out thousands of possible deals to grade every card, suggests a bid and reports your accuracy. No ads next to the table, no coins, no account.

Rules in short: follow suit; the highest trump or the highest card of the suit led wins the trick; make the tricks you bid. Full rules for both games and the differences between them are on the rules page.

Spades is one of the Snug Table games: free classic board, card and tile games with provably fair dice and deals, a free coach, no ads and no gambling.

How to Play

Common

52 cards, four players, 13 cards each. You must follow suit. The highest trump wins the trick, otherwise the highest card of the suit led; the winner leads the next trick.

Spades (US, partnership)

Players sitting across are partners and spades are always trump. Each player bids the number of tricks they will take; the team contract is the sum. Making it scores 10 per trick bid plus one per overtrick (bag); failing loses 10 per trick bid. Every 10 accumulated bags cost 100. Nil (0): take no tricks for +100, any trick costs 100. You may not lead spades until they are broken unless you hold nothing else. Played to 500.

Batak (Turkish auction)

Everyone plays for themselves. Starting left of the dealer, bid at least 5 and higher than the previous bid, or pass; if all pass the dealer is held to 5. The high bidder picks trump and leads. You must beat the card currently winning when you can, and must trump (and overtrump) when void. The bidder scores the tricks taken if the bid is made, otherwise loses the bid; everyone else scores their tricks. Played to 51.

How they differ

Spades is a team game: you play to your partner's bid and manage nil and bags. Batak is every player alone: set the bidder or make your own bid, and the obligation to beat the table makes it sharper.

Coach and fair deal

Legal cards glow. The coach compares every card by playing out thousands of possible deals, suggests a bid and reports your accuracy after each hand. The deal is sealed before the cards are dealt and revealed afterwards; the "Fair deal" badge verifies it.
